5 Finalists Named for Community Service Award

Five San Fernando Valley community activists, representing a broad spectrum of interests, were selected Thursday as finalists for the annual Fernando Award.

The announcement came during a luncheon--which was attended by about 250--at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City.

A committee of Fernando Award board members, past award winners, benefactors and chamber of commerce representatives reviewed the qualifications of 14 nominees before choosing the finalists for the prestigious community service award.

This year’s finalists are:

* Lee Kanon Alpert of Northridge, an attorney and member of the Los Angeles Building and Safety Commission who also is active on the Cal State Northridge Advisory Board;

* Rose Goldwater of Woodland Hills, a community activist who is the founding chairwoman of the West Hills Hospital Community Advisory Board and active in the Woodland Hills Chamber of Commerce;

* Ruth Richter of Winnetka, owner of West Valley Cycle Sales in Winnetka and who is active with the San Fernando Valley Mobile Action Committee and the Police Action League;

* Bob Scott of West Hills, an attorney and past president of the United Chambers of Commerce who is also a member of the Valley Industry and Commerce Assn.; and

* Robert D. Voit of Balboa, a developer and co-founder of the West Valley Boys & Girls Club in Woodland Hills.

Last year, Walter W. Mosher Jr., founder and president of Precision Dynamics Corp. in Pacoima, was honored with the Fernando Award.

The 41st annual award will be presented at a dinner Nov. 5 at the Warner Center Marriott.
