BMW of North America Inc. is recalling almost a third of the 1995 models it sold in the United States to replace an engine-control computer chip that could cause the cars to exceed federal exhaust emission limits for oxides of nitrogen. The 30,000 cars involved in the recall are 1995 3.0- and 4.0-liter BMW 530i, 530iT, 540i, 740i, 750iL and 840Ci models. Affected owners will be notified by BMW. The company, the U.S. marketing and distribution arm of German auto maker BMW, agreed to the recall after testing its cars under the Environmental Protection Agency’s durability program, which requires auto makers to determine if vehicles continue to comply with federal emissions standards after they are sold. BMW said the repair work will take about two hours per car and will be done free of charge. Dealers have already been supplied with replacement chips, a BMW spokeswoman said. Owners who want additional information about the recall can call BMW’s consumer relations line at (800) 831-1117 or the EPA at (202) 564-9331.
