Maddox’s Bill Is Shameless

Share

* I was disgusted to read the Aug. 15 letter from Assemblyman Ken Maddox (R-Garden Grove).

Maddox described a bill he is sponsoring that is named after a murdered officer and would penalize counterfeiters using computer equipment.

Officer Don Burt was shot to death in 1996 after he discovered counterfeit checks during a traffic stop. What angers me is Maddox’s shameless use of a slain officer’s name on a bill that has nothing to do with helping to protect the courageous officers on the streets as he claims it will.

Maddox’s bill deals with taking away high-tech computer equipment from counterfeiters, not saving more officers’ lives.

If this bill brought harsher penalties against perpetrators of violence against officers, it truly would be worthy of Burt’s name.

Instead, Maddox has chosen to sugarcoat a bill, pass it through a Democratic Legislature and appear bipartisan in the 2000 elections.
