Golay, Mashia Propel Trojans to 72-60 Win

Senior forward Danielle Golay scored 16 points, making eight of 11 shots, and Erica Mashia came off the bench to make five of eight three-point shots for all of her 15 points as the USC women’s basketball team defeated San Diego State, 72-60, Saturday night at San Diego.

The Trojans (3-1) made only 31 of 70 shots (44.3%) but eight of 22 from three-point range (36.4%). The Aztecs (1-5) shot 50% but got off only 36 shots. San Diego State was 24 for 30 (80%) from the foul line; 17 for 20 in the second half.

San Diego State center Mary Apiafi, a 6-foot-2 senior who attended Pasadena City College, led all scorers with 22 points. She also had eight rebounds.

USC had a 36-23 lead at halftime. San Diego State took only three-point shots and missed all three.

No. 2 Georgia 78, Alcorn State 38--The Lady Bulldogs (8-1) outscored the Ladybraves (2-2) 39-19 in each half at Houston. Angie Ball scored 16 points for Georgia.

Georgia had a 46-30 rebounding edge. Tawana McDonald had 10.

Texas 87, No. 10 Illinois 84--JoRuth Woods scored 22 points and Edwina Brown had 19 as the Longhorns (5-2) held off the Illini (5-3) at Austin. It was the second consecutive loss for the Illini after they had cracked the top 10. The other loss was to No. 1 Connecticut.

No. 12 Iowa State 93, Western Illinois 53--Stacy Frese scored 19 points and made three of four three-point shots as the Cyclones beat the Westerwinds (3-3) at Ames, Iowa. Frese, a senior in her third season at Iowa State, has made a school-record 200 three-point shots. She made 19 as a freshman at Iowa.

No. 13 Oregon 90, Colorado 58--Shaquala Williams scored 17 points and Angelina Wolvert had 15 as the Ducks (5-0) beat the Buffaloes (2-4) at Eugene, Ore. It was Oregon’s 18th consecutive victory at home.

No. 18 Kansas 76, No. 15 UC Santa Barbara 73--Suzi Raymant scored 23 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:29 left, as the Jayhawks (5-0) beat the Gauchos (4-3) in the championship game of the KU Credit Union Classic at Lawrence, Kan. Rachelle Rogers led Santa Barbara with 19 points.

No. 16 Texas Tech 63, Southern Methodist 47--Plenette Pierson scored 21 points as the Lady Raiders (5-0) beat the Mustangs (3-2) at Lubbock, Texas.

No. 17 Purdue 69, Indiana State 67--Candi Crawford’s layup with 21 seconds remaining capped a rally from a 10-point deficit and the Boilermakers (5-1) beat the Sycamores (3-2) in the Big Four Classic at Bloomington, Ind.

No. 19 Old Dominion 71, Syracuse 46--Lucienne Berthieu had 19 points and 10 rebounds and the Lady Monarchs (4-1) beat the Orangewomen (5-2) at Syracuse.

No. 24 Boston College 83, Kent 70--Becky Gottstein scored a career-high 26 points and the Eagles (5-3) beat the Golden Flashes (3-3) at Boston.
