Irvine’s PTA council unanimously voted Monday to support putting another parcel tax measure on the April ballot, a move school district trustees have been mulling over in recent weeks.

A proposal for a flat $95 parcel tax per year failed by less than 1,000 votes in the November election. Irvine Unified School District trustees face the burden of making $4 million in cuts that threaten programs for the arts, music, science, class-size reduction and neighborhood schools. About 100 teachers are expected to be laid off.

School board members, who said they were willing to fight for the programs until the bitter end, said they would be willing to push for another measure to avoid scrapping the district’s enrichment programs.

But PTA leaders cautioned that without an outpouring of support from homeowners associations, churches, real estate agents and other community leaders, parents would not take on the burden again.
