Replicating the Look

Share

You can search (probably in vain) for genuine Malibu or Catalina tiles at antique shops and swap meets, but California Tile and Pottery Works in Los Angeles makes handcrafted reproductions of the treasured tiles, originally produced in the ‘20s and ‘30s. The tile works calls them Malibu Revival Tiles and offers quite an assortment, copying original tiles owned by a friend and collector. Though all tiles are essentially custom orders, you can have the company copy a tile you already own or even a photo of an old tile.

The company also makes tables with reproduction tile tops that would be the perfect centerpiece for a California patio garden. A 2-by-3-foot outdoor metal table with fancy Revival tile top would cost around $700.

Malibu tiles were actually manufactured in that beach community (they are well documented in “Ceramic Art of Malibu Potteries, 1926-1932,” by Ronald L. Rindge [University of Washington Press, 1994]).
