A Southern California Edison underground transformer failed Saturday night, knocking out power to 3,952 mid-city customers, a company spokesman said.

The power failure occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m., and it took two hours to restore power to all but 100 customers. It was unknown when power would return to the remaining customers, Edison spokesman Glen Becerra said.

The affected area was north of Marview Drive, south of Avenida de Los Arboles, west of California 23 and east of Lang Ranch Parkway.
