Defending a Critic
I felt compelled to write in response to the Counterpunch by John Gallogly criticizing Times theater critic Michael Phillips (“Take More Chances? People in Theater Take Chances Daily,” Dec.6). Gallogly described Phillips as “out of touch” with the theater community. I believe I am not alone in that community in saying that I heartily endorse the viewpoint Phillips espoused.
Although there is clearly a place (and an audience) for the annual productions of “A Christmas Carol” that Gallogly describes, it is laudable when a critic takes a strong stance encouraging the real risk-takers: people who are working to create theater that speaks strongly to issues, ideas, and that tries to expand the language of the form.
Both artists and audience depend upon perceptive, enlightened and thoughtful critics with a deep background in the arts they are covering to bring attention to the work that should be seen. Phillips is one of those critics and he deserves our praise, not our condemnation.
