Coming of 2000s
Think how much easier it would be if we spoke of the indisputable coming of the 2000s rather than the disputed coming of the third millennium and placed the founding of our nation in the 1700s rather than the 18th century and the building of the Parthenon in the 400s BCE rather than the 5th century BCE; the Italians do it by calling the 1400s the quattrocento.

Somebody forgot to include the year zero in the first millennium. So just call that person mathematically inept and understand that the first millennium only had 999 years and ended on Dec. 31, 999. The second millennium does have 1,000 years and ends on Dec. 31, 1999. You’d better hurry up and understand this or you’ll miss the big event.
