Dylan McDermott, who stars in the ABC law drama “The Practice,” and his wife, actress Shiva Afshar, have settled into their new Brentwood home, which they purchased from Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas for about $4 million.

McDermott, 37, has starred in “The Practice” since it began airing in 1997. He has played the same attorney character in a few episodes of the popular comedy series “Ally McBeal.”

He also has appeared in a number of movies, including “In the Line of Fire” (1993), in which he played Clint Eastwood’s partner, and “Till There Was You” (1997), in which he was torn between Sarah Jessica Parker and Jeanne Tripplehorn. He also romanced Holly Hunter in Jodie Foster’s movie “Home for the Holidays” (1995).

Griffith stars in the upcoming John Waters movie “Cecil B. Demented.” Banderas, who directed his wife in the fall movie “Crazy in Alabama,” co-stars with Woody Harrelson in the upcoming boxing movie “Play It to the Bone.”

Actress Michelle Pfeiffer, wife of “The Practice” and “Ally McBeal” creator David E. Kelley, owned the Brentwood home before Griffith, 42, and Banderas, 39, bought it nearly three years ago. The couple, who had leased Pfeiffer’s house for more than a year before buying it, bought a Hancock Park house earlier this year in the $4-million range.

The Brentwood house has four bedrooms in 4,000 square feet. The Spanish-style house was built in the 1920s but was recently refurbished. It has three fireplaces, a courtyard with a fountain, a library, pool and spa.

Griffith and Banderas moved to a nine-bedroom 15,000-square-foot house in Hancock Park with a ballroom, wine vault, greenhouse, motor court and two laundry rooms. It was also built in the 1920s. They eliminated a few bedrooms and created a music studio, sauna and gym while renovating the Mediterranean-style house this fall.

Jordan Schur, president of the revived L.A.-based Geffen Records, has purchased a Beverly Hills-area home for nearly $1.7 million.

Schur, who is in his 30s, was named six months ago to head the record label, which underwent restructuring in 1998 after Universal Music Group acquired Polygram, which owned Geffen Records. David Geffen, who founded the company, sold it in 1990.

Schur worked at his family’s real estate business in New York before starting Flip Records, which has been at the forefront of the music industry’s rock resurgence for the last two years with the act Limp Bizkit.

In an unusual arrangement, Schur retained ownership of Flip while assuming the helm at Geffen. The November release of the soundtrack to the movie “End of Days,” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was the first high-profile disc from Geffen under Schur.

Schur bought a four-bedroom 3,600-square-foot house with city views. The house was recently gutted and rebuilt. It was owned by veteran Beverly Hills real estate broker Stan Herman.

Schur was represented in his purchase by Bob Ross of Re/Max Beach Cities. Herman was represented by Heather Gussman of Herman’s company.

Chinni’s new 4,400-square-foot home has walls of glass and panoramic views from every room. The contemporary-style house overlooks Arroyo Seco and the Rose Bowl.

Chinni, a former Kmart executive who worked for Macy’s for 30 years, became CEO of Strouds in July 1997.

Tony and David Rios of Diamond Properties and Investments, Covina, were the selling agents.

A Capistrano Beach home owned by the Hutton Foundation is on the market at a little less than $3 million.

The foundation was established by the late Harold and Betty Hutton, longtime Orange County philanthropists who were major benefactors of Chapman University.

He was a wildcatter from the Midwest; she was raised in Orange County. Together, they built a transpacific oil and trading business.

After he died in 1975, she founded a commercial development and property management company. She died at 82 in 1995.

Built in 1976, the oceanfront home has two bedrooms plus a guest suite in slightly more than 4,000 square feet.

The house is in Beach Road, a gated 200-home enclave in Capistrano Beach, a Dana Point neighborhood of 3,000 homes. Actor Anthony Edwards also has a retreat in Beach Road.
