The Earth will be at perihelion--its closest point to the sun--at 9 p.m. on Jan. 2. At that moment, the sun will be 91 million miles away, which is 3 million miles closer than it will be on July 3 at its most distant point. We are cold in January because our Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and the days are short.
