Laptops Convenient for Office Thieves Too

Willie Sutton once said he robbed banks because that’s where the money is. According to a new survey on computer security, thieves are stealing computers out of offices because that’s where the laptops are.

More stolen laptops are taken from offices--41.3%--than anywhere else, according to the Kensington Technology Group computer security survey, released last week. More than half the Fortune 1,000 and other large companies surveyed said they relied on guards, gates and other building security systems to protect their computers, while fewer than one in five said they used cables and locks to secure computers to their desktops. San Mateo, Calif.-based Kensington makes computer accessories, including security devices.

Outside of the office, the most popular locations for thieves are cars and taxicabs, followed by airports and hotels, according to the survey.
