Impeachment Proceedings

Re “New Sign of GOP Failure,” editorial, Jan. 28: It is incredible that you call a process that has gone way beyond what was first predicted a failure. What you are stating in your editorial is the equivalent of a trial proceeding in which you poll the jury just after opening arguments and prior to any testimony, saying it should stop. Why are you so insistent in stopping the constitutional process that has been operating as prescribed by our founding fathers?

The Jan. 27 “lock-step” partisan vote in the Senate puts to rest once and for all the myth of the “moderate” Republican.

The most serious issue raised by the partisan impeachment fiasco, aside from the wanton waste of taxpayer dollars, is the question as to whether lawyers are competent to effectively run government other than into the ground. In the middle of the Thirty Years’ War, a 17th century Swedish diplomat rued, “Do you not realize with how little wisdom this world is run?” In our own Congress, the lack of wisdom becomes increasingly obvious as the current impeachment war goes on and on and on.

I hope that the impeachment trial drags on interminably. While doing little harm to the president, the Republicans remained focused on self-destruction and, thankfully, distracted from their usual business of ruining the country for the rest of us.

All in favor of throwing out all former and present lawyers from Congress say “aye.” All those opposed say “nay.” The “ayes” have it; throw them out and turn Congress back to the people!

I now understand the Democrats’ definition of partisanship. It’s when the Republicans have more votes than you do.

A letter writer suggests stakes in the heart of Kenneth Starr and the House managers. Paul Conrad’s cartoon labels the managers and the Republican Party elephant as “Dead Men Walking” (Jan. 27). Clinton defenders have no shame in their defense of their sorry president.
