Pacific Symphony’s Summer Series Will Feature Competition Winners
The Pacific Symphony’s summer series will be highlighted by solo performances of the gold medalist of the 1998 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and winner of the first prize at the Leeds (England) International Piano Competition in 1996, orchestra officials announced Monday.
Violinist Judith Ingolfsson will play Mozart’s “Turkish” Concerto on Aug. 7 at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre. Pianist Ilya Itin will perform Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto on Sept. 18 at the amphitheater.
The five-concert summer series will include three fireworks finales and a laser-light show.
All concerts will begin at 8 p.m. Subscriptions go on sale in March for $120 to $260. (Half-price tickets for children under 14 are available in all sections but the orchestra.) Tickets to individual concerts will be $14 to $57 (half price for children under 14 in all sections except the orchestra) and will go on sale May 31.
Carl St.Clair will conduct all concerts except where indicated.
The ’99 season:
* July 4: Richard Kaufman, conductor; Jason Graae, singer and dancer; Marcia Mitzman, soprano: music by Steiner, Goldsmith, Rodgers, Cohan, Berlin, Sousa. Fireworks.
* July 24: Jorge Federico Osorio, piano: Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Capriccio espagnol,” Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,” Mussorgsky/Ravel’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.”
* Aug. 7: Robin Follman, soprano; Judith Ingolfsson, violin: waltzes by Strauss, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, works by Fritz Kriesler, operetta excerpts.
* Aug. 28: Nancy Tunnicliffe, bagpipes: film music by John Williams, Davies’ “Orkney Wedding.” Laser show, fireworks.
* Sept. 18: Barry Jekowsky, conductor; Ilya Itin, piano; Huntington Beach Concert Band: Tchaikovsky program, including Piano Concerto No. 1, excerpts from “Swan Lake,” “1812” Overture. Cannons, fireworks.
