CHARITY SCORECARD

Bob Waldorf was a Jewish Little Brother, then he was a Big Brother, twice, then a member of the agency’s board, then president. And on Jan. 16 he was reunited with his former Big Brother (Marco Aronson) and one of his Little Brothers (Mark Dorfman) and honored by the group with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his 53 years of involvement with Jewish Big Brothers / Camp Max Straus (where he--you guessed it--camped as a kid). About 400 people attended the gala dinner at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, which raised $385,000 for the agency’s programs. Waldorf became a Little Brother in 1946 and has stayed in touch with his Big Brother and the second of his two Little Brothers. He joined the Jewish Big Brothers board in 1971 and became president in 1994. He opened his business, Idea Man Inc., in 1971 and has remained a leader in the promotional marketing field. Jewish Big Brothers / Camp Max Straus offers the core mentoring program, child-oriented family counseling, a nondenominational, multicultural summer camp for at-risk youths and a sports mentoring program.

The Laugh Factory and West Hollywood City Council candidate Jerome Cleary held a candlelight vigil and comedy show Jan. 13 to benefit the Matthew Shepard Scholarship at the University of Wyoming, and to raise awareness of hate crimes. Comedians Anthony Clark, Wendy Leibman, Craig Shoemaker, Margaret Smith, Marcie Smolin, Paul Mooney and Jason Stuart performed. Also, the improv group Uninvited Guests entertained the 90 guests. The $1,300 raised will go to the scholarship fund in memory of Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student, who was beaten to death last fall.
