Clemency
No matter how one feels about the death penalty, Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan’s decision to spare a life because the pope’s visit is still fresh on his mind (Jan. 29) can only be itself spared from scorn if it is followed by the clemency of all other death row inmates in Missouri. Otherwise we will know it for what it is: hypocrisy.
