From Times Wire Reports
An opposition leader went on trial for speaking in public without police permission, a rare act of civil disobedience that challenged Singapore’s restrictions on speech and assembly. Chee Soon Juan, head of the 200-member Singapore Democratic Party, is accused of violating the Public Entertainments Act on Dec. 29, when he gave a speech to hundreds of people without obtaining a police permit. Chee faces a possible fine of about $3,000 and a five-year ban on running for office if he is convicted.
