Man Dies During 911 Malfunction
Susan Ungvary instinctively dialed 911 when her boyfriend collapsed Sunday. She got one busy signal after another. Ungvary ran three blocks to a police station. When paramedics arrived, they couldn’t revive John Audy, 41, who was in New York to celebrate Ungvary’s birthday. Authorities said he apparently died of a heart attack. Authorities were investigating whether an hourlong malfunctioning of the city’s 911 system contributed to Audy’s death. City officials said they had reviewed each of the 75 medical calls that had come in during the failure and found no other cases in which a seriously injured person was left stranded.
