President Clinton and the first lady issued a terse statement Wednesday saying they “deeply regret and are profoundly saddened” by the decision of People magazine to run a cover story on their daughter, Chelsea.

“Unfortunately, despite personal appeals with respect to her privacy and her security from her parents, People magazine has chosen to run the story,” the Clintons said in a statement issued by the White House, appealing to other news media to continue to respect their daughter’s privacy.

The president and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton have fiercely guarded their daughter’s privacy throughout their time in Washington and when Clinton served as governor of Arkansas.

Chelsea Clinton is now a student at Stanford University in Palo Alto, and, although occasional reports have surfaced about her life as a college student, she has escaped the frenzied media attention given to other celebrities in the United States.

“We deeply regret and are profoundly saddened by the decision of People magazine to print a cover story featuring our daughter, Chelsea,” the Clintons said in their joint statement. “For over six years, the media has understood and respected the unique situation facing Chelsea as she grows up in the spotlight focused on her parents.”
