The U.S. Census Bureau is looking to hire 475 people in Orange County for the 2000 population count. Accurate counting will be critical to California in maintaining its fair share of representatives in Congress, because the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that statistical sampling cannot be used to adjust figures to account for those missed in the census. Officials fear that an undercount could cost the state up to $3 billion in federal assistance. The census jobs will last three to six weeks, pay $11.75 per hour and will include paid training. Applicants must pass a written test and be U.S. citizens. Information: (714) 796-4601.
