Census Bureau Seeks Temporary Workers

Share

More than 150 Ventura County residents are being sought for temporary jobs to help the federal government conduct the year 2000 census.

Applications are being accepted for canvassers, who walk through neighborhoods and verify addresses by knocking on doors and talking to residents, said June Grillo, a spokeswoman at the U.S. Census Bureau office in Santa Maria.

The job pays $9 per hour and can last up to six weeks. People must call the Santa Maria office at 347-1923 to schedule a time to take a 30-minute basic skills test and fill out a lengthy application.

Applicants must be 18 or older and U.S. citizens--and have good references. Grillo said those hired will likely work in their own neighborhoods for the sake of convenience. Work hours are negotiable.

Hiring and training will begin in late March with canvassing to begin April 12. Results of the canvass will be used to create a master list that federal officials will use to mail census questionnaires in 2000.
