Valley College, which opened its doors in 1949, plans to kick off a yearlong celebration of its 50th anniversary with a birthday bash from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday. The celebration will include food, a 6-foot long cake, music and a video of archival photos of the campus and the Valley. A silent auction of items donated by local businesses and celebrities, including photos of a Muhammad Ali fight and a jacket signed by Sylvester Stallone.

Proceeds from the auction will go toward the college’s privately funded writing lab, where students can improve their skills with the help of faculty tutors and computers.

“We want to keep the Writing Center going,” said Dean of Student Services Yasmin Delahoussaye. “We had a million-dollar grant, and it ran out. I know we’re going to raise thousands of dollars,” she said, referring to the auction.
