Sheriff’s Department Plans Free ‘Academy’

Residents interested in seeing behind the doors of the county’s criminal justice system--a jail, crime lab and the bustle of a 911 dispatch center--can do so in a class being offered in March.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department will host its fifth free Citizen Academy, which starts March 12 and runs 12 consecutive Wednesday nights at the county Government Center at 800 S. Victoria Ave. in Ventura.

“The program is designed to build a better understanding and stronger partnership between citizens and law enforcement,” said Deputy Robert Davidson.

The academy focuses on the department’s operational procedures. Classes will be taught by Sheriff’s Department officials. Participants will be able to talk with department commanders and other staff members, Davidson said.

During the academy, a variety of topics will be covered, including criminal law and undercover operations. Students will participate in ride-alongs with deputies and will also tour the department’s heliport.

Applications must be received in advance and can be obtained by calling 654-2890 during normal business hours. For more information, call Davidson or Maria Rangel at 654-2668.
