Getting the Word Out on HIV

Share

A major HIV education campaign has been launched in Los Angeles to provide information to Latino males, one of the most overlooked groups in need of sound information, according to health experts.

The Spanish-language campaign, launched by Advocates for Youth, involves public service announcements on radio and TV that encourage individuals not to ignore the threat of HIV.

“The Latino community is somewhat in denial about the realities of HIV and that they can be at risk--particularly Latino males,” says Kate Langrall Folb, director of Advocates for Youth’s Media Project. “Sexual risk-taking needs to be portrayed as something to be taken seriously, and, in that regard, we need to encourage responsible behavior like getting tested and using condoms.”
