Chapman’s Maurer Stops Azusa Pacific

Erik Maurer pitched a six-hitter to lead Chapman to a 3-2 victory over Azusa Pacific in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Chapman.

Maurer (2-0) gave up only one earned run, striking out seven and walking three for the Panthers (5-0). Junior Adam Olow had three hits, including two doubles, and scored twice for Chapman.

Nate Philo and Justin Duarte had two hits each for Azusa Pacific (8-2-1).

In another nonconference game:

Concordia 12, UC San Diego 9--Concordia had 17 hits in its victory at home. The Eagles (7-5-1) trailed, 4-1, but but took a 7-6 lead after three errors in the second inning by UC San Diego (5-4) and a two-run homer by Jason Radwan.

Concordia’s Brandon Reimer had a two-run single in the sixth and Brian McClintic singled in Reimer for an 11-6 lead.

Reimer extended his hitting streak to six games after going two-for-three with three RBIs. Derek Patterson and McClintic had three hits each.

Concordia freshman Matt Canada picked up his first collegiate victory.

UC San Diego threatened to take the lead in the eighth after scoring twice to cut the deficit to 11-9 and then loading the bases with one out. But Concordia’s Justin Johnston got Eric Schramm to hit into a double play to end the inning.

In The Master’s baseball tournament:

Southern California College 22, University of British Columbia 3--SCC showed no mercy as the Vanguards pounded British Columbia in the first round.

Kevin Candelari went four for six with three home runs and four runs scored. Eric Booth hit two home runs, two triples and a double.

Adam Steckler gave up only three hits in six innings and struck out four to earn the victory.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

The Master’s 66, Chapman 52--Chapman was outscored, 37-23, in the second half. Jilynn Smith scored 15 points and April Abeyta had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers (14-10).

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 8, Long Beach State 1--The Anteaters (2-4)won their second consecutive match, led by Jonni Seymour and Darian Chappell. Seymour defeated Long Beach’s Lara Spica in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-5, and Chappell cruised by Diane Asis in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

Seymour and Chappell teamed to win in No. 1 doubles, 9-7. The visiting 49ers (1-5) got their only point in No. 3 singles from Connie Burggraf.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 1--UC Irvine won the first game, 15-0, but then lost the next three, 15-7, 15-12, 15-9. Donnie Rafter had 28 kills and 12 digs for the Anteaters (4-7, 3-6).
