Distant Storm to Bring Heavy Surf

Share

Heavy surf generated by a powerful storm near New Zealand is expected to hammer the Southern California coast today and Saturday.

Waves up to 7 feet tall are forecast for many beaches, with occasional sets up to 10 feet at southwest-facing coastal communities such as Malibu, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and San Clemente.

Riptides are expected at most south-facing beaches until late Saturday or early Sunday.

The New Zealand storm is too far--more than 5,000 miles--to affect Southland weather, but a much weaker storm system moving inland over the Pacific Northwest is close enough to keep Southern California dreary for the next few days.

Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies, with scattered patches of fog, are forecast for today and Saturday in the Los Angeles Basin, and the National Weather Service says another Northern Pacific storm could drop some light rain here Sunday afternoon through Monday morning.

Temperatures through the weekend should remain slightly cooler than usual, with highs in the 60s following overnight lows in the 40s and 50s.
