Hahn is one young violinist who has shunned the glitz of the prodigy path, and there is a remarkable breadth and maturity to her supremely elegant and accomplished Beethoven. Indeed, at times it is almost terminally tasteful and poised, verging on the placid just when we most need some hint of revolutionary energy. Though a bit spunkier, her approach to Bernstein’s Plato-inspired Serenade-cum-Concerto is also pervasively lyrical and idealized--this is a Symposium long on manners and short on dialectics. Her tone and playing in both pieces are noble and unforced, and her interpretations well within expected parameters. Zinman and the BSO accompany with equally polished restraint.
