Citrus Competition

Re “Argentina Citrus Plan Assailed,” Feb. 9.

The noble speeches in Thousand Oaks and the lukewarm response from local Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) are not enough to encourage U.S. Department of Agriculture officials to stop citrus competition from Argentina.

If we are to continue to be global supplier with our current $275-million citrus production in Ventura County, it becomes absolutely imperative that all growers, large or small, use their influence on the USDA and the Secretary of State to oppose competition from the Southern Hemisphere.

The USDA is attempting to to introduce a dangerous course for Ventura County citrus growers. The fact is, the sizable sum of revenue produces a healthy tax and employment base that would be jeopardized if Argentine imports were to become reality.

It is a clear fact that our leadership position in Far East exports would be greatly diminished. Labor costs alone would put us at a great disadvantage, even with innovative and extensive marketing.

We can only maintain our leadership position by a strong letter-writing campaign by all growers and labor contractors statewide.

When you are meek like sheep you will be devoured by the dingoes.
