Leoncavallo’s “I Pagliacci” usually is paired with Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” to make a full evening in the theater. But Opera Pacific will pair the work with Orff’s concert piece “Carmina Burana.” Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland have created choreography for the Orff, which will be presented by their 12-member company, Bodyvox. This double bill was originally prepared for Portland Opera in 1997. It will be overseen in Costa Mesa by the original stage director, Christopher Mattaliano. John DeMain will conduct.

* Orange County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. Also 7:30 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. $28-$93. (714) 556-2787.

Bizet’s “Carmen” unfolds not in old Seville, Spain, but in Baja California in this UCI Opera Theatre production, while the student cast sings a new, gritty English translation by drama professor Robert Cohen. The production follows Bizet’s original staging, which included spoken dialogue as well as arias and choruses. Thomas Cockrell will conduct.
