MTA Board Authorizes Labor Union Election

LOS ANGELES — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board on Thursday authorized a union election for more than 500 of the agency’s nonunion workers.
The decision to conduct the balloting was made despite the fact that 74% of the workers already have signed cards selecting the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union as their bargaining agent.
Mayor Richard Riordan, chairman of the MTA board, urged an immediate count to verify the card signatures, rather than holding an election. However, the board decided instead on an election.
