CACHUMA LAKE--Trout are still the main attraction, with lots of limits. Fish to five pounds biting best on Needlefish lures and Power Bait. Largemouth bass action is picking up, with plastic worms doing the best.

LAKE PIRU--Trout fishing remains fair and trollers using shad-pattern Rapalas and orange Needlefish are doing best. The fish are deep, though, so lead-core line of two-four colors is recommended. Bass fishing is slowly improving. Try crankbaits or night crawlers.

IRVINE LAKE--Big trout remain the top draw and inflated night crawlers, Serra Gold and Power Bait remain the top catchers. A cash contest is underway through Sunday. Details: (714) 649-9111.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout fishing is still good on rainbow and chartreuse Power Bait, but bass fishermen are doing well too. Some hooked trout were even attacked by voracious bass.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Strong bass bites are in progress at Lower Otay, where a 12-pounder was caught on a Rapala; El Capitan, a nine-pounder on a plastic worm, and San Vicente, an eight-pounder on a crawdad. Trout season is coming to a close, but Miramar is still producing. Otay yielded a 48-pound blue catfish for Dern Bounthavizy, San Diego, who used mackerel.

LAKE JENNINGS--Trout fishing is tapering off but bass fishing is improving, with the males moving into the shallows to stake out their nests. Catch and release is advised. Top trout was a 9-pound 2-ounce catch by Bill Schneeberg, Chula Vista, on Power Bait in Sentry Cove.

DIXON LAKE--Water levels are down because of maintenance and although access has improved, fishing has subsided. Some trout, bass and catfish.
