Arizona Girl Wins Contest to Name Lion
The cub with no name is no more.
An Arizona girl won a nationwide contest to name the 8-month-old lion cub at the Moorpark College teaching zoo. Her winning submission--”Savannah”--was selected from those of 1,489 children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America who participated.
“We were very pleased with the responses,” said Lynne Doria, assistant director at the college’s Exotic Animal Training and Management Program. “We had huge boxes filled with artwork. The drawings and different names were incredibly imaginative.”
The winner is 10-year-old Katie Harrington of Chandler, who said she chose Savannah because it is the grassland of Africa where most lions roam.
For winning, Katie received a T-shirt, a lifetime pass to the zoo, a certificate and a picture of the lion.
