Malaysia’s national police chief resigned to take responsibility for the beating of former Deputy Premier Anwar Ibrahim while in police custody. The resignation of police Inspector-General Abdul Rahim Noor comes a day after Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said he may seek an independent inquiry into Anwar’s beating. Meanwhile, Anwar sued Mahathir and the outgoing police chief for injuries suffered after his arrest on corruption and sexual misconduct charges. Mahathir fired Anwar in September, saying he was morally unfit for government. Anwar is on trial on charges of abusing his power to cover up illegal sexual activities. He has denied the allegations.
