Thumbnail sketches of the 13 Republican House Judiciary Committee members who will present the case against President Clinton:

Henry Hyde, 74. Elected in 1974, Hyde, who represents Chicago suburbs, presided over the Judiciary proceedings that led to the full House impeachment.

F. James Sensenbrenner, 55. Elected in 1978, Sensenbrenner represents Milwaukee’s suburbs. He is also chairman of the House Science Committee, where he has dealt with the international space station.

Bill McCollum, 54. Elected in 1980, McCollum represents the Orlando area. He was one of the Republicans’ most visible members in the days after Clinton’s Aug. 17 admission of an improper relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

George Gekas, 68. The chairman of the Judiciary Committee’s panel on commercial and administrative law, Gekas represents Harrisburg, Pa. He was elected in 1982.

Charles T. Canady, 44. Canady, born and raised in Lakeland Fla., is an attorney who holds a law degree from Yale University. He was elected in 1992 and chairs the panel’s Constitution subcommittee.

Steve E. Buyer, 40. The attorney who lives in Monticello, Ind., was elected in 1992. He served as legal counsel for the 22nd Theater Army in the Persian Gulf operations.

Ed Bryant, 50. Lawyer elected in 1994 represents suburban Nashville, south to the Mississippi border. He served in the Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps and has taught at West Point.

Steve Chabot, 45. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Chabot was elected in 1994 to represent his hometown. He is an attorney who has supported requiring jail inmates and people on probation to do public works projects.

Bob Barr, 50. Barr, elected in 1994, resides in Smyrna, Ga. He introduced a measure asking the House to launch an impeachment inquiry in November 1997, before the independent counsel had expanded his investigation into Clinton’s affair with Lewinsky. He is a former analyst for the CIA.

Asa Hutchinson, 48. He represents northwestern Arkansas and knows Clinton personally. Hutchinson was appointed by President Reagan as U.S. attorney for the state’s Western District in 1982, serving until 1985.

Christopher Cannon, 48. Elected in 1996, Cannon represents Provo, Utah, and part of Salt Lake City. He is an attorney and counts among his accomplishments his efforts to reform the IRS.

James Rogan, 41. Rogan has represented the Glendale area since 1997. He received a law degree from UCLA and served as a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney as well as a judge in the Glendale Judicial District.

Lindsey O. Graham, 43. The native of Seneca, S.C., represents three counties in the northwestern tip of the state. He served as a judge advocate in the Air Force and may be best known for his role in the attempted coup than nearly ousted Newt Gingrich as House speaker in the summer of 1997.
