L.A. County Museum Organizes Art Programs for the Youngsters
“Art for Tots” once-a-month, participatory programs for preschoolers ages 3 to 5 are being offered by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. They include mini-gallery tours and games, plus hands-on art activities.
The programs begin Feb. 24 with “What Makes Art?,” focusing on nontraditional forms and materials, with a workshop in mixed-media assemblages.
Other sessions include “Ancient Art Comes to Life” (March 24), an exploration of how myths and legends are depicted in the museum’s “Ancient West Mexico” exhibition, followed by a workshop in creating artworks that tell a story; and “Inside-Out: New Perspectives in Art” (April 21), an introduction to works by Modern masters and a workshop that lets children create their own abstract works.
The series winds up with “The Japanese Pavilion: Nature in Art” (May 19), a look at how artists are inspired by the natural world, and a related mixed-media workshop.
Each session will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and all children must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and must be reserved in advance; the fee for each session is $10.
Checks, payable to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, should be sent to Education Department, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036; reservations will be confirmed by letter. Information: (323) 857-6512.
