Giving Kids a Sense of Space

“Children Design Their Own Surroundings,” a workshop encouraging kids to think creatively about their environment, will be offered on eight Saturdays starting Saturday at the Southern California Institute of Architecture.

Participants will study and discuss their homes, neighborhoods and schools, said Alla Kazovsky, director of the newly formed Children’s Architecture Workshop program.

Working first with simple wooden blocks, the students will then draw designs and eventually use cardboard, fabric and other materials to create designs. “The point is not to educate little architects,” Kazovsky said. “The point is to help kids develop three-dimensional thinking and broaden their horizons.”

Participants will be divided into a group for children 6 to 8 and another for kids 9 to 13. Workshops will be held on consecutive Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the institute, 5454 Beethoven St., Los Angeles. The $215 fee includes materials. Information: (323) 655-4028.
