31 Area Groups Awarded Grants for Youth Sports

The Amateur Athletic Foundation has approved grants totaling $1,418,357 out of its 1984 Olympic surplus funds to 31 organizations serving youth sports in Southern California.

The largest grant was $575,035 and went to Kids in Sports, Los Angeles, to provide sports programs at 12 sites to more than 9,000 youths in the inner city.

Among the grants, $241,081 went to the Southern California Velodrome Assn., for cycling programs at the Olympic Velodrome in Carson and the San Diego Velodrome; $150,000 was awarded to the National Junior Tennis League; $57,100 to the Young Golfers of America and $49,853 to the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center.

Mini-grants totaling $3,000 or $5,000 went to sports organizations from Carpinteria in the north to San Diego in the south.

The foundation so far has given away more than $90 million and its investments have kept the original fund replenished.
