Cigarette Taxes

Share

“Up in Smoke” (Jan. 8) itemized the taxes per pack of cigarettes that have been imposed by the state of California. They total 87 cents per pack. But, sales tax of 8.25%, which is 7 cents, is calculated on the 87 cents of taxes. Am I the only person who objects to paying sales tax on other taxes? Is this legal? Does the State Board of Equalization condone double taxation? What’s going on here? Is it “tea bag” time?

Also, soft drinks and mixes have the 5-cent California redemption value tax added to the cost and sales tax is charged on that, too. Give us a break!
