FRESHWATER

Compiled by Jim Matthews, Outdoor News Service.

SILVERWOOD LAKE: Overall slowish action with only a few trout and deep-water bass showing. The holdover trout that are being caught are nice fish with some topping two pounds. Spinners and spoons have been the best bet. Most of the bass are deep and feeding on shad. Manny Freire, Spring Valley Lake, caught a three-pound, eight-ounce specimen on a jigging spoon in 50 feet of water.

LAKE PERRIS: A DFG trout plant was scheduled this week, and that bite should produce better action on rainbows and largemouths. The trout bite has been spotty since the last plant two weeks ago, and the bass bite has been tough. There was a WON Bass Team tournament Sunday and there were 52 teams that weighed in 69 fish. Robert Petroff, Temecula, and George Cobb, Lake Elsinore, took first place with five bass that totaled 15.04 pounds.

CORONA LAKE: This lake remains one of the best places in Southern California to catch either a limit of trout or have a shot at a monster rainbow. The top trout this week included one fish at 14.1 pounds caught by Cody Voss, 6, of Riverside. The young angler’s father, Eric Voss, landed a 12.9-pounder.

LAKE SKINNER: The trout action has been pretty fair at Ramp No. 2 and the point adjacent to the ramp. Most fish are about a pound, but a 4-6 rainbow was caught by Juan Castorena, Long Beach. Stripers are slow.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: An 18-pound rainbow trout was caught by Peter Guerrero, Wilmington, to lead the parade of big rainbows being caught since the kickoff of the $50,000 Tagged Trout Extravaganza last Thursday. His fish was one of 33 rainbows caught here that topped 10 pounds. Other big fish included: Larry Galanta, Anaheim, with a 16.8-pounder; Rob Martin, Chino, a 15.9-pounder, Ryan Coston, Placentia, a 15.4-pounder.

IRVINE: Good trout action this past week with 27 trout in excess of five pounds reported, including the week’s biggest at 12.3-pounds caught by Tom Duka, Huntington Beach, on a Rapala. The Splash for Cash event begins today with tagged trout worth from $10 to $1,000 planted, and the biggest trout of the event, which concludes on Monday, will be worth $500.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE: Good trout action since the recent plant of 5,000 pounds of Utah rainbows. Morning has been the best time of day. Roe, salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, Sierra Gold, and Power Bait all working. John Bartley, Downey, caught the week’s best--a 6-10 rainbow on Power Bait at the launch ramp.

OSO RESERVOIR: The bass bite is fair to good for anglers vertically jigging Hopkins or Kastmaster lures in 25 feet of water. Plastic worms or shad-like plastics on darter heads also very productive.

CACHUMA LAKE: The trout action has continued very good after DFG and Mt. Lassen plants last week. Lots of limits by those still fishing with Power Bait or inflated nightcrawlers in the back of Cachuma Bay. Trolling is also good with Needlefish behind two to three colors of leadcore at the island or at the Narrows. Shore action is best at El Dorado Point.

CASITAS LAKE: Trout action is excellent. There were two plants of trout last week. Five-fish limits are common and weigh nearly 10 pounds. The best shore action has been at the Coyote Launch Ramp, and trollers are hammering the fish on Needlefish.

CASTAIC LAKE: A DFG trout plant was scheduled for the upper lake this week, and the trout action is fair in the lower lake after last week’s plant. The trout plant in the upper lake should perk up the striper and trout bites. The bass action has improved with some decent action on waterdogs in 10 to 15 feet.

LAKE PIRU: The trout action remains good for trollers fishing Needlefish in the firetiger or brass-fire colors or with Rapalas in the firetiger or shad color patterns. The east side of the lake has been the best area, although the face of the dam and the mouth of Reasoner Cove also are producing.

PYRAMID LAKE: Spotty action. A few stripers are showing in 40 to 60 feet of water on cut bait.

LAKE POWAY: Continued good trout action with weekly plants. Top fish this week was a four-pound rainbow landed by Taylor Kowalski, Poway, on Power Bait off the south shore. Most of the bigger fish are showing on Rapalas, however.

LAKE JENNINGS: Slow to fair trout action over the weekend. Last week’s expected stock did not arrive. The bass action is neglected, but Troy Folkestad, Mission Viejo, caught a 7.3-pounder fishing at Sentry Point with a plastic.

LAKE CUYAMACA: The good trout action has continued this week with limits common on bright Roostertails or inflated nightcrawlers dipped in scent.
