Church to Mark King Weekend

* Moorpark College philosophy professor Elton Hall will help the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura mark Martin Luther King Jr. weekend Sunday morning by speaking of contributions to American society that were made by King, Gandhi and Mother Teresa.

Lily Starobinets will play the piano.

Services will be held at 9:15 and 11 a.m. Religious education for all grade levels is offered, and a social hour will follow both services.

Bilingual Worship Service

* A special bilingual worship service will be held Sunday at All Saints Episcopal Church in Oxnard. The service begins at 10 a.m.

The annual parish meeting will convene at 11:30 a.m. in the sanctuary, followed by a potluck at 12:30 p.m. in the parish hall.

Interfaith Church Plans Activities

* The Interfaith Church for Today holds its Sunday morning worship service at 10 in the Thousand Oaks Inn’s Garden Room at 75 W. Thousand Oaks Blvd. Sunday school with nursery care is also held at 10 a.m.

The 4T Prosperity class begins at 6 p.m. Sundays, led by the Rev. Giff Smith and Andrew Graham.

The Monday evening discussion group meets at the adjacent Borders Bookstore at 7 to talk about Neal Donald Walsh’s book “Conversations With God.”

On Thursdays, a “Miracles” study group meets with Kathy Youngman at 3:30 p.m.

Temple Etz Chaim Slates Events

* Events at Temple Etz Chaim this month will include a breakfast at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the social hall, hosted by the Men’s Club. Mark Eaton from the Simon Wiesenthal Center will speak on hate groups. The cost is $5 for members and $4 for guests.

Rabbi Neal Loevinger will conduct Torah study sessions at 5 p.m. today and Jan. 23. On Jan. 24, he will teach an adult education class titled “Be Cool in Shul.” The morning will be spent studying the choreography of a Jewish service.

Church to Hold Parish Celebration

* St. Anthony Church in Oxnard will hold its anniversary Parish Celebration at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church. A social hour will follow.

Mass times for St. Anthony’s are 5:15 p.m. Saturday; 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday in English, and noon and 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Spanish.

The sacrament of penance is held Saturdays from 3:30 to 5 and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Lecture on Lubavitcher Rebbe

* The Conejo Jewish Academy in Agoura Hills will host a lecture by Rabbi Laibel Groner at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Groner was the personal secretary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, for four decades.

“There are presently 2,500 Chabad centers throughout the world--a living legacy to one great man, Rabbi Schneerson, whose teachings and love for all humanity was truly a light unto the nations,” said Rabbi Moshe Bryski of Chabad of the Conejo.

The lecture, titled “The Lubavitcher Rebbe--a Light Unto the Nations,” will begin at 8 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Admission is $10 general and $7 for senior citizens. For reservations, call (818) 991-0991.

Religious-Oriented Diet Program

* A religious-oriented diet program will begin at Oxnard Church of the Nazarene at 7 p.m. Thursday. The first night will be an informational meeting for the public.

Author to Address Clergy, Leaders

* Michael McManus, author of “Marriage Savers,” will speak at a breakfast meeting of Ventura clergy and community leaders at 7:30 a.m. Friday at Gospel Light Publications.

McManus will present strategies for how clergy can cooperate to strengthen marriages and reduce divorce, said Paul Dugan, associate pastor of Ventura’s Community Presbyterian Church.

Peace Now Leader to Speak

* Galia Golan, a leader and spokeswoman for the Israeli movement Peace Now, will be featured in the Friday Shabbat service at Temple Beth Torah in Ventura.

Titled “Israel and the Prospects for Peace,” Golan’s discussion will center on the peace process and current political climate in Israel. Golan is a visiting scholar at the Center for International Relations at UCLA.

Scholar-in-Residence Program

* Temple Beth Haverim in Agoura Hills will present its first Scholar-in-Residence program at 6 p.m. Friday with a family Shabbat dinner. At 8:15 p.m., the adult Shabbat service will be led by Rabbi Gershon Johnson. Syndicated columnist Marlene Adler Marks will be the featured speaker during the service.

Marks will also speak at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at a festive Havdalah with cheese, wine, noshes and dessert preceding her dialogue, workshop and book signing.

Singles Connection Plans Dance

* The Camarillo Christian Singles Connection will hold a dance from 7:30 p.m. to midnight Jan. 23 at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

The band Expressions will play 1950s to ‘90s music, plus country and swing. Munchies and door prizes will be featured at the casual-dress night. The dance will be smoke- and alcohol-free. Admission is $8 before the event and $10 at the door.

Exhibits to Highlight Ministries

* Trinity Lutheran Church in Simi Valley plans a Mission Sunday for Jan. 24. Pastor Al Young’s message will be “Many and Various Missions.” Exhibits illustrating the ministries supported by Trinity members will be highlighted.

Exhibits will include Wycliff Bible translators, Lutheran Braille workers, Crisis Pregnancy Center, Simi Valley PADS program to feed and shelter those in need, Muslim Outreach and L. A. Lutheran High School.

Unity Church to Elect First Board

* Unity Center Church of Thousand Oaks will hold its first membership meeting after the Jan. 24 service. The membership will elect the church’s first Board of Trustees.

Church Plans Super Bowl Bash

* Ojai Valley Community Church invites the public to attend its free Super Bowl bash at the church Jan. 31.

Beginning at 1 p.m., pregame festivities in the youth center will include basketball, Ping-Pong, table games, drinks and snacks. At 3 p.m., the game will be shown on two large screens in the sanctuary.

Church Schedules Fund-Raiser

* The Westlake Church of Religious Science will hold its first 1999 fund-raiser, a cabaret and auction, Feb. 5.

Entertainment by Bob Holland and church musicians and a no-host wine bar with hors d’oeuvres will be accompanied by an auction.

Donations of auction items are needed at the church by Feb. 1.
