1996 Castello di Farnetella Chianti “Colli Senesi,” Tuscany. (About $12)

I tasted this new release in Italy and, even there, this Chianti from the hills around Siena was a standout. Castello di Farnetella is owned by Giuseppe Mazzocolin, who also owns the top Chianti Classico estate Fattoria di Felsina in Berardenga, but because the vineyards are just outside the Chianti Classico zone, the price is lower. The 1996 Castello di Farnetella is a gorgeous garnet color, juicy and vibrant in flavor with a marvelous silky texture and a scent of cherries. A terrific everyday wine to drink with pasta, chicken, grilled pork chops and roasts.

It should be widely available in the L.A. market.
