Silicon Graphics Inc. shares rose to their highest level in 15 months after the struggling computer maker reported a smaller-than-expected loss of $25 million, or 14 cents a share, for the fiscal second quarter ended Dec. 31, excluding a nonrecurring gain. It had been expected to lose 19 cents. Sales fell 20% to $684.8 million from $850.8 million. SGI shares rose $2.69, or 18%, to close at $17.69 on the New York Stock Exchange. SGI, once the dominant maker of machines used for computer graphics, has been hurt by competition from lower-priced machines. It rolled out its own so-called Wintel machine this month.
