Organizers expect 12,000 congregations to join the “Souper Bowl” Jan. 31. The fund-raising campaign to help the hungry coincides with pro football’s Super Bowl. Last year, 8,600 churches raised $1.7 million.

At “Souper Bowl,” church youths ask worshipers to give $1 apiece as they leave services. Some also collect canned goods. The proceeds go to local charities.

The idea originated in 1990 with the youth group at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia.

“We believe this idea is a gift from God, and we encourage everyone to join the team,” said the Rev. Brad Smith, one of the founders.
