Sprained Ankle Sidelines Gadzuric

Share

Center Dan Gadzuric will not play today at Louisville because of the sprained right ankle he suffered Wednesday against USC.

The Bruins are hoping to get him back when Pacific 10 Conference play resumes Thursday against Washington State at Pullman.

Instead of going with Travis Reed, his top big man off the bench, Coach Steve Lavin probably will start Ray Young at small forward and move JaRon Rush to power forward.

It will be the second start for Young, who, like Rush, gave indications against the Trojans of breaking out of a shooting slump.

Young had made only 10 of 31 shots the previous seven games before going five for five, with two three-point baskets, giving him 12 points and four rebounds in 14 minutes at the Sports Arena.

“It was a real confidence booster,” he said. “It’s also good to find your shot on the road, so you have that much more confidence when you come back home.”

Coming up: Thursday at Washington State, Jan. 31 at Washington.

* Records--Bruins 13-4, Cardinals 10-4.

* Update--Louisville is dangerous, as its No. 24 ranking and Dec. 26 victory over Kentucky will attest, but the Cardinals are also in a very difficult stretch. The No. 13 Bruins come to Freedom Hall about 40 hours after No. 5 Cincinnati left with an easy 81-55 victory and a 44-19 domination on the boards. Cardinal guard Cameron Murray, a transfer from USC and brother of former UCLA standout Tracy Murray, is averaging 13.5 points and shooting 52.3% overall and 48.6% on three-pointers. It’s all the more impressive considering he has been playing with a stress fracture of the left foot.
