Man Gets 65 Years for Ax Murders

A 19-year-old man who for nearly a year maintained his innocence in the ax murders of a minister and his wife pleaded guilty in Indianapolis. Paul Brightman will spend 65 years in prison for killing the Rev. C. Frederick Mathias and his wife, Cleta, on Dec. 15, 1996. Brightman had claimed he was helping a friend burglarize the couple’s home when they returned. Defense attorney Mark Inman said Brightman had a change of heart over the weekend. Brightman will be sentenced in March.
