Harassment and the Homeless

Share

I am homeless and within the past three or four days I’ve not only noticed but have to basically run the gauntlet with Ventura’s finest: the Police Department.

For some reason known only to the mayor, City Council and the Police Department, it seems that we homeless have been targeted for undue harassment, intimidation and, sorry to say, truly unjust treatment.

I would like to ask why.

I admit that there is, on the streets here in Ventura, more than one person who just seems to want to mess up everyone’s life. Be they street people or the good citizens of this city, I personally cannot apologize or accept responsibility for their actions. It does, however, give all of us out here a stigma.

We are human beings with feelings, emotions and, yes, our own set of problems.

I am sure that most people are aware of the mentally or physically handicapped homeless, myself included. Various doctors over the years have told me that I am bipolar, borderline multiple personality disorder. I take medication for these problems. Others are not even aware of their illnesses or where to go to get help.

Would it surprise any of you to know how many veterans are out here--Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm? Yeah, we’re here! We still care about our country!

All I’m asking on behalf of myself and all of us out here on the streets is, if we come and ask for work or want to share a laugh or smile, please don’t give us the cold shoulder. Believe me, it’s cold enough at night already.

Thank you all. I have faith in your judgment as well as your human feelings. God bless all of you and yours!

P.S. Watch out for that Y2K bug. It’s probably worse than any street person.

H.R. HYDER, Ventura
