In a Court of Love

What, he forgot your birthday? She’s being a know-it-all? Give ‘em a citation. For couples having difficulty communicating about partnership woes, the “Relationship Citation Booklet” may be the lighthearted answer you are looking for. Relationship citations are similar to traffic tickets, except they are issued for violations of the laws of love: insensitivity, nagging, leaving the toilet seat up, snoring and more. Each booklet contains 50 citations. The white copy is given to the violator, and the pink copy remains in the booklet for record keeping.

On the backs of the citations are a number of restitutions. Options for making amends include a trip to see the in-laws, mowing the lawn, an evening out or a massage.

Barbara Naylor and her partner, Pernell Clark, came up with the idea for the product two years ago, when they were romantically involved. “We had come to an impasse in an argument and Pernell said, ‘You’re in violation!’ We went our separate ways soon after but came back together to do this.”

Their Carson-based company is called Simply Friends Productions. Naylor adds with a laugh, “We’re just business partners.”
