City, County to Review Security at Area Airports
Motivated by concerns over increasing terrorism and possible insufficient airport security, the county Board of Supervisors have approved a measure to review security at local airports.
The measure, proposed by Supervisor Mike Antonovich, calls for the county and city airport commissions to issue reports and recommendations about security at area airports, said Cam Currier, Antonovich’s press deputy. The recommendations are due within 60 days, he said.
Currier said the measure approved Tuesday was sparked by concerns raised in a recent Times opinion article by Jerry B. Epstein, a former president of the city Board of Airport Commissioners. Epstein cited a 1996 Federal Aviation Administration report of a major airline, which found that undercover agents armed with guns, grenades and bombs had slipped past airline security guards.
