ORANGE COUNTY EARNINGS

Newport Corp.: The Irvine manufacturer of test equipment for the disk-drive, fiber-optic and communications markets reported that net income for the fourth quarter totaled $2.6 million, or 28 cents a share, unchanged from a year ago. Sales declined 10% to $33.4 million from $37 million. Profit for the year increased 27% to $9 million, or 96 cents a share, from $7.1 million, or 77 cents a share, the previous year. Sales advanced 1% to $134.4 million from $132.6 million.
