Caddie Collapses at Western Open
Caddie Garland Dempsey was in critical but stable condition Saturday after his heart stopped and he collapsed on the 15th hole during the third round of the Western Open.
Dempsey, John Maginnes’ caddie, was conscious and breathing on his own at Palos Community Hospital, said Rich Stech, the assistant chief of the Lemont Fire Protection District.
Maginnes looked shaken as he walked off the course after shooting a one-under-par 71, leaving him eight strokes behind leader Tiger Woods. Maginnes got an update from Stech and then went to the hospital.
It’s not clear why Dempsey, 51, collapsed, but the temperature was in the 90s, with the humidity making it seem like it was in excess of 100 degrees. Dempsey was walking up the fairway on the 15th hole when he collapsed. Maginnes yelled for help, and Matt Moore, a spotter for ABC, performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
